Simple ways to protect your smart home
Hackers can target your Wi-Fi-connected devices—from indoor cameras to baby monitors. Here’s how to keep them safe, so you can enjoy all they have to offer.
We’ve come a long way from “clap on, clap off.” Today, smart home technology allows us to control our lights with a simple command, adjust the temperature through an app on our phones, and answer the doorbell when we're not even home.
These features are convenient, but are they safe? Most smart devices need to be connected to Wi-Fi, which makes them potentially vulnerable to cyberattacks. But unlike your laptop or phone, if hackers can access the technology in your home, they can do more than steal your personal information—they can also peer into your private life.
In recent months, hackers have compromised Ring™ indoor cameras, taking advantage of weak passwords to access the devices and control them remotely. Online intruders can use similar methods on baby monitors, smart locks, and even smart TVs. Last November, researchers even found a security flaw that allowed them to control smart speakers from hundreds of feet away with lasers.
Despite these security concerns, there are three simple ways to protect your smart home:
Create strong passwords and change them regularly.
Make sure you’re using two-factor authentication when it’s available to add an extra layer of protection to your accounts.
Regularly update the software on your smart home tech to fix any security flaws.

How to factory reset your iPhone, Android, and what to know before you do
Need to reset your phone? Asurion Experts share their tips for how to restore your iPhone and Android to factory settings and steps to take before you do.
Few things are more exciting than getting a brand-new phone. Between discovering its cool features to testing out the camera and snapping that first pic, a new device is something we all look forward to. That is, until we have to decide what to do with the old one. Whether you choose to repurpose your current phone, sell it, or swap it out for your new device, it’s important to perform a factory reset and remove all your personal information.
At Asurion, our experts help millions of customers get the most out of their favorite tech, from setting up new phones to fixing broken or cracked screens. Here are their tips for resetting your device without losing your important data.
Why would you need to factory reset your phone?
In general, a factory reset should be your last resort. Unless you are getting rid of the device and want to wipe all its content, restoring a phone to its default settings will mean starting from scratch. While others may advise you to perform a factory reset if your phone is experiencing problems like freezing up, shutting off, or running slow, our experts only recommend this fix when you’ve tried everything else.
What happens when you factory reset your phone?
Knowing how to reset your phone to factory settings is just as important as understanding what it’s designed to do—which is delete nearly everything on your phone. A factory reset erases all your data, apps, and preferences. That includes the following:
What a factory reset deletes from your phone
Contacts
Photos and videos
Music
Passwords and files
Accounts
Messages
Anything else you have added to the phone
Wondering what’s left after a factory reset? Just your phone’s current software. That’s why it’s important to make sure you’re prepared to take such a big step.
What should I do before I reset my phone?
The first thing you should do before resetting your phone is back up your data. Transferring your information to a new device or uploading it to a service like iCloud, Google Drive, or one offered by your phone carrier will ensure you don’t lose everything during a factory reset.
But be warned: the back-up process can be time-consuming. And it’s best to save your files over a secure Wi-Fi connection, so you don’t use up a lot of cellular data during the transfer. However, once the backup is complete, you’ll be able to restore your settings and information on your damaged phone or when you get a new one.
Steps to take before you factory reset your iPhone, Android
Whether you have an iPhone or Android device, you’ll also want to make sure you know your login information before you reset your phone. This is important for many reasons. For iPhone users, your Apple ID and password will let you access data stored in iCloud across your devices. And a Google Account username and password is required to restore data after resetting an Android device. You can typically find both your Apple ID and Google Account in Settings.
Here are a few other ways to prepare for a factory reset:
Unpair or disconnect BluetoothÆ devices like your smartwatch or wireless headphones.
Sign out of all apps, services, and email accounts.
Turn off Find My iPhone, Find My Device or Find My Mobile.
Delete cards from your mobile wallet.
Remove SIM card or deactivate your eSIM.
Plug your phone into a power source and connect it to Wi-Fi.
After backing up your data and completing the checklist above, don’t forget to sign out of your phone, too. Although a factory reset removes all the information stored on the device, this will ensure no one can access your account after you get rid of it.
How to factory reset your iPhone
Still want to do a factory reset? There are a few different ways to do it, but the easiest way is through Settings. Here’s how to reset an iPhone:
Open Settings, then tap General > Reset.
Tap Erase All Content and Settings. You may have to enter your passcode or Apple ID and password to confirm your decision.
Tap Erase iPhone.
Your iPhone’s screen will go dark, and you may have to wait a few minutes for it to fully erase. When you see the device turn back on, the factory reset will be complete.
How to factory reset your iPhone without the passcode
Forgot your iPhone’s passcode? We’ve all been there. But if you enter the numbers incorrectly too many times, the device will be disabled, and you’ll be forced to do a factory reset just to access your phone. For iPhone X and later, Asurion experts recommend doing this:
If your iPhone is connected to a computer, disconnect it.
Press and hold one of the volume buttons and the Side button until you see the power off slider. Then drag the slider to the right and turn off your phone.
Connect your iPhone to a computer and hold the Side button. When you see the recovery mode screen, release the button.
Hopefully you backed up your phone before you got locked out. If so, you should be able to restore your data after you remove the passcode.
How to factory reset your Android phone
For an Android device, you can usually perform a factory reset in Settings, but it can take up to an hour to complete. Make sure your phone is plugged into power while resetting it.
From there, the steps are simple. Here’s how to reset a Samsung Galaxy phone:
Open Settings, then tap General management > Reset.
Tap Factory Data Reset > Reset > Delete all.
For other Android models, you can use Search to reset your phone to its original settings.
Open Settings, then search “Factory data reset”.
Tap Factory Data Reset in the results. Tap Reset or Reset Phone if prompted again, then enter your password or PIN to confirm your decision.
How to factory reset your Android phone when locked
If you can’t remember the PIN, password or pattern to unlock your phone, you may be forced to do a factory reset to erase it. Use our experts’ tips for resetting Samsung Galaxy S8 and newer phones:
Turn off the phone if it doesn’t require a PIN to do so. You may have to wait until it runs out of battery to turn off on its own.
Press and hold the Volume Up, Power and Bixby buttons simultaneously until your phone vibrates and the Samsung logo appears.
When the Recovery menu appears, press the Volume buttons to select “Delete all user data" or "Wipe data/factory reset”. Then press the Power button to make your selection.
Use the Volume buttons again to confirm “Yes” or “Factory data reset,” then press the Power button to select it.
Once your phone processes the factory reset, you may see the message “Data wipe complete” at the bottom of your screen. Press the Power button one last time to select the option “Reboot device”.
Your Samsung phone will reset and power back on automatically when it’s time to set it up.

Tech the halls with the Asurion Home+ holiday gift guide
It’s that time of year again, except it’s 2020. Instead of hopping on a plane to see family and friends, our research shows that more than 70% of Americans say they’ll be celebrating the holidays virtually. But just because you’ll be on a video call doesn’t mean you can’t get into the spirit—and find the perfect gifts for all your loved ones.
Here at Asurion, our experts not only help you get the most out of the tech you use every day, they’ve been scouring the web for the best gadgets for everyone on your list, whether they’re into traveling, fitness, cooking, or gaming. So, pour yourself a glass of eggnog, queue up your favorite playlist, and check out our holiday gift guide below.
The best tech gifts for travelers
We’ve been cooped up all year, and many are anxiously awaiting their next vacation—especially the travel lovers in our lives. Whether they bought an RV and hit the road or spent the last few months planning their post-pandemic adventure, help them chronicle it with the GoPro® Hero9 camera, which captures 5K video on its dual screens. Worried your friends and family will run out of battery along the way? You don’t have to with the Mophie Powerstation® AC, a portable power bank with multiple USB ports that can travel wherever they do. Another good option for those on the go is the iPad Air®. This packable tablet allows users to work remotely, watch movies, or play games—even when they don’t have Wi-Fi.
The best tech gifts for fitness enthusiasts
Our fit friends have gotten more creative (and jacked) in 2020, turning their living rooms into home gyms. But with kettlebells and weights often still hard to find, they need new and innovative ways to keep moving, like an Apple Watch® Series 6 or Apple® Fitness+ subscription. The smartwatch can detect blood oxygen levels, track sleep, and monitor activity, while the subscription service provides access to different workouts and trainers on compatible devices. For the yogis in your life, or anyone looking to stay in the zone, try the Bose® QuietComfort® 35 II headphones. They have an extra-soft headband and can cancel out noise—so your friends and family can focus on their workout.
The best tech gifts for gamers
Playing video games is an easy way to take your mind off the pandemic and engage in some friendly, socially distanced competition. If you can get your hands on either of 2020’s hottest gadgets—the PlayStation® 5 or Xbox® Series X—you’re already levels ahead of your gift-giving friends and family. Both consoles have different models to choose from and capabilities like 4K graphics and superfast processing power. Already on your holiday shopping list? Pair these systems with a Philips Hue® Play HDMI Sync Box so the colors of the TV screen and smart lights in the room synchronize when it’s time to play. You can also buy your loved ones the Razerô Kishi smartphone controller—it’s great for the mobile games they can’t put down.
The best tech gifts for foodies
‘Tis the season for home-cooked meals, although many of us have been eating them all year long. For your friends and family members who want to prepare a holiday dish, consider kitchen gadgets like The Instant Pot® Smart WiFi multicooker to heat food 70% faster than a conventional oven or the Meater® Bluetooth thermometer to make grilling steaks simple. Both devices can be controlled with your smartphone. Here’s another perfect pairing: new recipes and the Google® Nest Hub Maxô. Your budding chef or favorite foodie will love using Google Assistantô to get step-by-step instructions for their holiday feast.
The best tech gifts for music lovers
With live concerts and festivals mostly canceled this year, music lovers have had to adapt, watching old shows on YouTube® or listening to countless coronavirus playlists. Make their holiday season special with gifts like the Audio-Technica® AT-LP120X turntable or the JBL® Boombox 2. The record player has a built-in preamplifier and a tone arm with anti-skate control, and the Bluetooth portable speaker has a 24-hr battery life. Want something more private without sacrificing sound quality? Buy them a pair of Bose® SoundSport wireless headphones, so they can listen to their favorite holiday songs without disturbing anyone else.
The best tech gifts for sports fans
This year started off rough for sports fans, but now most professional leagues have resumed play. Those watching at home don’t want to miss a moment, and they won’t have to with gifts like a fuboTVô subscription, which offers more than 100 channels and live streaming on the go. Attendance is still limited at most sporting events, but your friends can feel like they’re at the game with the Sonos ARC™ soundbar; it features Dolby® TrueHD for a real stadium-like experience. Have a golfer in the family? The Arccos® Caddie Smart Sensors will improve their game by evaluating each swing and sending the feedback to their smartphone.
The best tech gifts for readers
There’s nothing better than curling up on the couch with a good book this time of year, especially now that so many of our favorite activities are off limits. And if your friends and family love reading, there are some great gift options for them this holiday season. One is the Kindle Oasis® e-reader. Not only can you download tons of titles, but it features a glare-free screen and is easy to use both day and night. For those who prefer paperbacks, try the MCHATTE® LED Desk Lamp, which has five different lighting modes and brightness levels—because eyestrain isn’t on anyone’s holiday wish list. You know what also doesn’t hurt the eyes? An audiobook. When you gift someone a subscription from Audibleô, they can listen to thousands of narrated books whenever they want.

Xbox Series X or S won’t turn on? Here’s how to fix it
You just bought the game, and you’ve already lost—but it wasn’t a fault of your own. The real reason you couldn’t play was because your Xbox Series X won’t turn on. We’ve all been there.
You just bought the game, and you’ve already lost—but it wasn’t a fault of your own. The real reason you couldn’t play was because your Xbox Series X won’t turn on. We’ve all been there.
When your console isn’t working, it can feel like game over, especially if you don’t know what caused the issue or how to fix it. Even newer models like the Xbox Series X|S can experience breakdowns unexpectedly similar to their predecessor, the Xbox One. Fortunately, when these gaming systems malfunction, there are a few ways to get things back up and running—because Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla won’t play itself.
At Asurion, our experts help millions of customers get the most out of their favorite tech, from finding the best noise-canceling headphones to preventing OLED screen burn when watching your TV. Here are their tips for fixing your Xbox gaming console when it won’t power on.
Why is my Xbox not turning on?
The most common reasons your Xbox Series X|S isn’t turning on are due to problems with the hardware, software, or the power supply. Here’s why you may encounter these issues:
Your Xbox’s internal components are damaged or malfunctioning.
The Xbox power cable is improperly connected or faulty.
Your Xbox isn’t well ventilated and may be overheating. This is also true if it continuously turns off and is warm to the touch.
An Xbox not turning on can also be the result of corrupted software or firmware. Partial or incomplete updates, corrupted game files, or a poor network connection can cause these issues.
How to check your Xbox Series X or S power supply
Unlike the Xbox One, an Xbox Series X|S doesn’t have a power brick. It has an internal power supply. If you determine that this is the cause of your Xbox Series X not turning on, our experts recommend getting your console professionally serviced. But before you do, make sure you’ve eliminated these power issues first:
Inspect the cable – Are you using the right power cable? It should be the one that was included with your device. Also is the power cable completely and firmly connected to both the power outlet and console?
Check the power outlet – Does anything else power on when connected to the same outlet? Try plugging in another electronic device and testing to see if it works.
Replace the power source – Is it still not powering on? You might need to move your console to a different outlet or try using a new power strip to plug in your device.
How to fix an Xbox Series X or S that won’t turn on
Xbox still won’t turn on? Once you’ve checked the external power source, you should also perform a power reset on the system. This will reboot your console and hopefully fix the issue. The steps are simple:
Press and hold the Xbox button for 5-10 seconds. This will ensure it’s powered off.
Unplug the power cable from the wall outlet and the cable connected to your Xbox.
Wait at least 10 seconds, then reconnect the power cable to your Xbox and wall outlet.
Press the Xbox button on the console.
If your Xbox Series X|S fails to turn on after the internal power reset, it may have a hardware issue or worse—your console needs to be replaced. Don’t panic: There are two more steps you can take before sending in your Xbox to be serviced.
Remove dust from USB ports and vents - You can use canned air or a bulb syringe to blow dust and dirt out of your Xbox console, which can be causing it to overheat.
Test your wireless controller - Press and hold the guide button on the controller to turn on your Xbox. Or if you’ve already been attempting to use the controller, try pressing the Xbox button on your console. Syncing issues can happen occasionally, and it’s one of the reasons users report their Xbox One not turning on as well.

How to Make, Edit, and Delete a Memoji and Memoji Stickers
Whether it’s a wink, laugh, smile, or thumbs up, an emoji can show how you feel without saying a word. But thanks to Apple’s recent software updates, you can express yourself even more with a Memoji—an avatar that looks just like you.
Whether it’s a wink, laugh, smile, or thumbs up, an emoji can show how you feel without saying a word. But thanks to Apple’s recent software updates, you can express yourself even more with a Memoji—an avatar that looks just like you.
At Asurion, our experts help millions of customers (and counting) get the most out of their tech, and they’ve been hard at work testing the coolest iPhone features to find the best ones for you. Among them: Memoji and Memoji stickers. Here are their tips for how to create a Memoji of your own and share them in Messages and FaceTime calls.
What is a Memoji?
A Memoji is a fully customized avatar that you can create to mimic your personality and mood. It’s similar to Apple’s Animoji (or animated emoji) feature, which allows you to send voice recordings and facial expressions in the form of different animals and objects like chocolate swirls (aka: poop). Memojis, however, can actually resemble you or someone else. Cool, right?
What are Memoji stickers?
Another way to show off your playful side is with new Memoji stickers, static cartoon images you can use in texts, emails or other apps. When you create a Memoji, it automatically becomes a sticker pack filled with pre-loaded reactions.
How do Memojis work?
Before you get too excited about your iPhone Memoji, it’s important to understand the technology behind them. Facial tracking sensors—like those used for FaceID—recognize your movements and expressions and mirror them. But only iPhone X and newer models can create animated Memojis with their front-facing TrueDepth cameras. Have an older device? Don’t worry, you can still make a Memoji and share them as stickers. We’ll show you how.
How to make a Memoji
Making a Memoji is as fun and silly as it sounds. Ready to get started? Here’s how to set up a Memoji in a few easy steps:
Open Messages and tap the Compose button (or pencil icon). You can also tap an existing conversation.
Tap the Memoji button, then swipe right and tap the plus sign.
How to make Memoji on iPhone 6/7/8
Thanks to recent iOS updates, older iPhone models can also create a Memoji—iPhone 6, iPhone 7, and iPhone 8—but they can only be used as stickers. Wondering how to get Memoji stickers on your phone? Follow these steps:
Create a Memoji using the steps above.
Open the Keyboard and tap the Memoji Stickers button.
Choose a sticker, then tap the Send button.
How to change your Memoji
There are a ton of ways to customize your Memoji so it looks more like you, from hair color to sideburns. You can even add personal touches like piercings, accessories, beauty marks, or a gold tooth. It’s simple:
Tap through each customizable feature—skin tone, hairstyle, eye color—and choose how you want your Memoji to look. Be sure to scroll to the bottom of each section to add options like freckles and beards.
Drag the sliders from left to right to adjust the color of your facial features. You can also tap the color wheel for even more varieties.
When you’re finished, tap Done to save your Memoji.
How to edit a Memoji
Want to try a different look? Create a Memoji to match your every mood. And if you don’t love how one turns out, give it a makeover with just a tap. Here’s how to edit Memoji on an iPhone:
Open Messages and tap the Compose button (or pencil icon). You can also open an existing conversation.
Tap the Memoji button in the App Tray, then select the Memoji you want to edit.
Tap the More button (or three dots), then tap Edit.
Customize your Memoji and tap Done when you’re finished.
Where to use your Memoji
Now, the fun begins! Once you’ve created and customized your Memoji, you can start using it in Messages and FaceTime calls. Just pick a Memoji from your list and try one of the methods below.
Record a 30-second video message of your Memoji and send it as a text.
Open Messages and tap the Compose button (or pencil icon). You can also tap an existing conversation.
Tap the Memoji button, then swipe left and choose a Memoji.
Tap the Record button to create a message and tap the Stop button when you’re finished. Your voice recording will play back to you.
Tap the Send button to share your Memoji message, or the Trash button to start over.
Choose a Memoji sticker or create your own, then send it as a reaction.
Open Messages and tap the Compose button (or pencil icon). You can also tap an existing conversation.
Open the keyboard, tap the Memoji Stickers button and choose a sticker. You can also create one using the Memoji button and dragging your Memoji into the chat.
Tap the Send button to share it as a reaction.
Add personality to video calls and appear as your Memoji on FaceTime.
Open FaceTime and start a call.
When the call begins, tap the Effects button (or star icon), then tap a Memoji.
Complete the FaceTime call as your Memoji. It will replace your head until you tap the x button to close the feature.
Can I use Memoji on Android phones?
You can send a Memoji to someone with an Android device, it’ll just show up as a video file. Samsung S9 and later models have a feature called AR Emoji, an avatar you can create similar to the Memoji. Android users can also use third-party apps like Bitmoji or Boo – 3D Avatar to make their own version and share it others.
How to delete a Memoji
When it’s time to delete a Memoji, you can do so easily in the Messages app. But be warned: once you get rid of a Memoji, you’ll have to start from scratch if you ever want to use it again. Ready to delete? Here’s how to get Memoji off your iPhone and make room for the new ones you’ll create:
Open Messages and tap the Compose button (or pencil icon). You can also tap an existing conversation.
Tap the Memoji button and select a Memoji.
Tap the More button, or three dots, then tap Remove. Your Memoji will be deleted.

How to connect two pairs of AirPods to one device
Your AirPods® are loaded with cool features that allow you to do everything from listen to music to answer a phone call. If you and a friend both own a pair, you can even connect them to a single device, like your iPhone® or iPad®, and jam to the same playlist, watch the same in-flight movie, or tune into the same video chat.
Here’s how:
What you need to connect two sets of AirPods
Like other wireless headphones, your AirPods use Bluetooth® technology to connect to your phone and other home tech, including laptops, tablets, wearables, and even smart TVs. This feature also lets you share audio with other AirPods and even some Beats by Dr. Dre® headphones. But in order to pair them correctly, your devices need to be compatible and running the latest software. Compatible models include:
iPhone 8 or later
iPad Pro® 12.9 inch (2nd generation) or later
iPad Pro 11 inch
iPad Pro (10.5 inch)
iPad Air® (3rd generation)
iPad mini® (5th generation)
iPad (5th generation) or later
iPod touch® (7th generation)
Apple TV® 4K
Newer Samsung® phones have a similar sharing feature called Dual Audio that lets you listen to a single device with two Bluetooth headsets or speakers. While you can connect a pair of AirPods to an Android™ device, you’ll have a more seamless experience using them with one listed above.
How to share audio on an iPhone or iPad
Once you’ve checked the compatibility of your wireless headphones, you can quickly pair them with an iPhone or iPad. It’s simple:
Connect the first pair of AirPods to your device. If this is your first time setting them up, keep your AirPods inside the case and open it near the device. Then follow the instructions onscreen.
Open Control Center on your device by swiping down from the top right corner of the Home Screen. Then tap the AirPlay® icon > Share Audio.
Now you’re ready to connect the second pair of AirPods. Hold the case near your device and open the lid. If you have AirPods Max® headphones, simply hold them close to the iPhone or iPad.
When your second pair of AirPods appear on the screen, tap Share Audio.
Adjust your audio sharing on an iPhone or iPad
Now that both AirPods are connected, you can easily press play, pause, or stop on the Lock Screen of your device or in the Control Center. Can’t agree on the volume? You can turn it up or down for each pair of AirPods separately using the volume sliders, or each listener can tweak it however they like using their headphone controls.
How to stop sharing AirPods
Ready to get back to listening on your own? When it’s time to stop sharing, you can disconnect either set of AirPods with just a tap.
Open the Control Center by swiping down from the top right corner of the Home Screen.
Tap the AirPlay icon then tap the checkmark next to a pair of headphones to stop sharing with them.
Now that you know how to connect more than one pair of AirPods to a single device, be sure to keep them safe with Asurion Home+™. We provide protection and tech help for more than 300 million customers. How to connect an Amazon Firestick to your laptop
Having an Amazon Fire Stick is one of easiest ways to stream your favorite movies and shows. Just plug it in to your TV, connect to Wi-Fi and hit play. But what about when you’re not on the couch—wouldn’t it be nice to use your Firestick on a laptop and binge watch Selling Sunset or Jack Ryan wherever you want?
Having an Amazon Fire Stick is one of easiest ways to stream your favorite movies and shows. Just plug it in to your TV, connect to Wi-Fi and hit play. But what about when you’re not on the couch—wouldn’t it be nice to use your Firestick on a laptop and binge watch Selling Sunset or Jack Ryan wherever you want?
At Asurion, our experts get questions like this every day. They help millions of customers (and counting) resolve their device problems and get the most out of their favorite tech, from finding ways to make a refrigerator last longer to cleaning a TV screen without damaging it. Here are their tips for how to watch Firestick on a laptop.
Can you use a Firestick on a laptop?
Your laptop has HDMI ports similar to those on your TV, but they work in different ways. The HDMI on your TV can send video and accept video from other sources, like the Amazon Fire Stick, but most laptops don’t have this function.
Laptops can only send video signals using their HDMI-out ports. This allows them to connect to external monitors and televisions and mirror their screen. The Fire Stick also uses an HDMI broadcast output to plug in and stream content to devices. Essentially, a laptop and Fire Stick are designed to do the same thing.
So does Firestick work on a laptop? The short answer is… not exactly. Both devices contain HMDI outputs, and to be compatible, there has to be an input as well. Fortunately, there are few methods you can try if you really want to learn how to use a Firestick on a laptop: an HDMI splitter, VGA adapter and a Video Capture device.
How to Connect a Firestick to a Laptop
Using a VGA Adapter – If you have an older laptop, it may have VGA ports instead of HDMI. Not sure? They’re usually located on the back of your computer. A VGA adapter can plug into these ports and connect to your Amazon Fire Stick so you can use it with your laptop. But you may want to get an adapter that has an audio output or a HDMI Audio Extractor to make sure you hear sound when you connect the cables. Our experts like this one from Amazon: The Moread HDMI to VGA Adapter.
Using a HDMI Splitter – An HDMI splitter can redirect your HDMI signals and allow you to connect a Firestick to a laptop. When you want to stream content, a splitter will work as a screen mirroring tool to display the same video on both your devices. And no need to worry about losing sound. HDMI splitters can share audio and video on your laptop and Fire Stick simultaneously without issue. Looking for a splitter? Here’s what Asurion Experts recommend: The Rocketfish™ 2-Output HDMI Splitter with 4K and HDR Pass-Through.
Using Video Capture – One way you may be able to stream your Amazon Firestick on a laptop is with the help of an external HDMI Video Capture Card. It will convert one of your HDMI-out ports into an input, so you can connect your two devices easily. You’ll just plug your Fire Stick into the Video Capture Card and plug the card into your laptop using a USB cord. Here’s our pick: Elgato Game Capture HD60 S
Remember, your Fire Stick is designed for a TV and due to HDMI limitations, it is not truly compatible with a laptop. If the above methods don’t work as intended, use your web browser to log in to your favorite streaming apps online. It’s the best way to watch videos on your device—without having to go to extremes.
How to Connect a Firestick to a Computer
Want to use your Firestick on a computer? Unlike a laptop, connecting your streaming device to a desktop PC or external monitor is relatively simple to do. Just plug it into an available HDMI port on your computer and switch to that input. But be aware that not all external monitors have speakers built in, so you may need to connect a pair of speakers or headphones to hear the audio.
How to Mirror a Laptop to Your Firestick
You can also easily mirror your computer screen to a TV using your Firestick. Your Windows laptop can do this, too. Just follow these steps:
On your Firestick:
Press and hold the Home button.
Select Mirroring from the menu, then select Enable Display Mirroring.
On your Windows PC or laptop:
On the right side of your taskbar, click the Notification icon.
Click Connect, then select your Firestick from the list.
Make sure your computer has a wireless adapter to enable screen sharing. It’s the only way to connect an Amazon Fire Stick to Windows 10 PCs.
Go to Settings > System > Display to change the resolution and scale of the screen.
Have a Mac? You can use a third-party app like AirScreen to mirror your Macbook onto your TV using a Fire Stick or other FireTV devices.

FaceTime not working? Here’s how to fix it.
Beep, beep, beep, beep—you know that sound. It’s a FaceTime call, one of the easiest ways to stay in touch with family members, friends, and colleagues from a distance. But as convenient as FaceTime can be, the video calling feature doesn’t always work like it should. In fact, sometimes it doesn’t work at all.
Fortunately, our Asurion Experts come across issues like this every day, from iPhone apps that drain your battery to those that crash your phone. But when tech breaks, we fix it. Is your FaceTime not working properly? Check out our tips for fixing the app on your iPhone, iPad, or other Apple device, so you can always talk to people face-to-face—no matter where they are.
The basics: How FaceTime works
FaceTime only works when you have a Wi-Fi, cellular data, or broadband Internet connection, and if you’re using a device that supports the app. Those include iOS devices, iPadOS devices, and Macs running OS X Lion 10.7 or later. Models older than the iPhone 4, fourth generation iPod touch, and iPad 2 won’t be able to use FaceTime.
As long as you have a compatible device, it’s easy to make and receive FaceTime video and audio calls. Just be sure you sign in to your Apple ID and/or add your phone number (iPhones do this automatically). Then, follow the steps below to start a chat:
FaceTime on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
Open Settings > FaceTime > Use your Apple ID for FaceTime.
Sign in with your Apple ID.
Return to the Home screen, then open FaceTime.
Tap the plus button and type someone’s phone number, email address, or name if the person is listed as one of your Contacts.
Tap the number, address, or name again, then tap Audio or Video to make a call.
FaceTime on Mac
Make sure your Mac has a built-in or connected microphone and camera.
Open FaceTime, then type someone’s phone number, email address, or name if the person is listed in your Contacts.
Click the Audio or Video button to make a call.
FaceTime on the web
Know someone with an Android phone, tablet, or Windowsô PC? FaceTime Links lets you invite anyone to chat over FaceTime, no matter the make or model of their device. Just send them a meeting link, and the call will open in their web browser so they can join. The feature becomes available with the Apple iOS 15 software update.
Why is FaceTime not working?
Although you can use the FaceTime app on multiple devices, certain issues are bound to occur, like unavailable calls, poor connection or sound quality, or a frozen screen. Here are a few of the most common problems and how to fix them, according to our experts:
Problem 1: FaceTime is unavailable
Seeing the message, “FaceTime unavailable” when you try to make a call? This isn’t always due to an error on your device; the recipient may be to blame. If they aren’t signed in to FaceTime on their phone, iPad, Mac, or iPod touch, they won’t see your call attempt. FaceTime may also show up unavailable for these reasons:
The recipient’s phone is turned off or set to Do Not Disturb.
The recipient is on a FaceTime call or failed to answer your call after several rings.
The recipient doesn’t have the app enabled on their device.
The recipient is not connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data, or their area is not supported.
The recipient’s contact information is incorrect, includes a call-forwarded number
or is blocked (or they’ve blocked you).
Open FaceTime on your device and try another contact, phone number or email address. If every attempt appears unavailable and FaceTime still isn’t working, the issue may be on your end. Fix it with these steps:
1. Restart your device. Turning it off and back on again can fix more problems than you think.
2. Make sure your device is up to date with the latest software. Not only does this help solve bugs and security flaws in your operating system, it may add new features and improve your device’s performance. Updating is easy to do:
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Open Settings > General > Software Update.
If an update is available, tap Install Now.
Mac
Open System Preferences > Software Update.
If an update is available, select Update Now.
3. Check that your settings are correct. This includes your FaceTime settings and those for Date & Time. If your device isn’t synced with the FaceTime servers, the app won’t work. Here’s how to adjust as needed:
How to change your FaceTime settings
iPhone and iPad
Open Settings > FaceTime and make sure FaceTime is turned on. You should also ensure your contact information (phone number and/or email address) under sections, “You Can Be Reached by FaceTime At” and “Caller ID” are correct.
Mac
Open FaceTime, then click FaceTime > Preferences in the menu bar at the top.
Under Settings, make sure your contact information is correct, then check the boxes next to the email addresses and/or phone numbers “You Can Be Reached by FaceTime At”.
How to change your Date & Time settings
iPhone and iPad
Open Settings > General > Date & Time.
Tap Set Automatically. If you can’t change it, return to Settings, then tap Privacy.
Tap Location Services > System Services, then turn on Setting Time Zone.
Mac
Open System Preferences > Date & Time, then select “Set date and time automatically”.
To make sure your time zone is correct, click Time Zone.
4. Test your Wi-Fi, broadband, or cellular data connection. FaceTime works best over Wi-Fi, but you can use it just as easily with 4G data on your iPhone or iPad. Either way, make sure at least one is turned on. It’s simple:
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch
Open Settings > Wi-Fi, then check to see if Wi-Fi is turned on and you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network.
iPhone and iPad
Open Settings > Cellular > Cellular data to make it’s turned on and displaying a good signal. You should also make sure FaceTime is toggled on in the list of apps allowed to use cellular data.
Mac
Open System Preferences > Network, then check to see if Wi-Fi is turned on and you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network.
5. Turn off Screen Time and disable content restrictions. This feature may be blocking you from using your device’s Camera and FaceTime app. Make sure they aren’t restricted in your Settings:
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch
Open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions.
Tap Allowed Apps, then enter your Screen Time passcode if prompted.
Tap the button next to FaceTime and Camera to allow access.
Mac
Open System Preferences > Screen Time, then select Content & Privacy in the sidebar.
Click the Apps tab and check the boxes for Camera and FaceTime.
Enter your Screen Time passcode if prompted.
Your Mac may also have a firewall or security software in place that could be interfering with FaceTime, especially if it’s made by a third-party manufacturer. For help disabling your firewalls and opening ports, take your Mac to your closest uBreakiFixÆ by Asurion store.
Problem 2: FaceTime is not connecting
Waiting on FaceTime to connect can be frustrating, especially when you don’t know what’s causing the issue or how to fix it. But don’t worry—whether it’s the age of your device, your signal strength, software, or the fifth member of your Group FaceTime call, our Asurion Experts have a few ways to get past the everlasting “connecting” screen and start a chat. Here’s how to fix FaceTime when it won’t connect:
1. Check Apple servers. When your FaceTime call won’t go through, you may not be the only one. Apple may be experiencing service outages or technical issues causing connection problems with the app. Check out its System Status page online to make sure.
2. Sign out of FaceTime, then sign back in. If it’s been a while since you signed in to your Apple ID on your device, re-entering your information may help move things along. Here’s how:
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch
Open Settings > FaceTime, then tap the email address next to Apple ID.
When the popup appears, tap Sign Out.
Sign out entirely, then restart your device. To sign back in, open Settings > FaceTime > Use your Apple ID for FaceTime. Then, be sure that you’re connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data, and your software is up to date.
Mac
Open FaceTime, then click FaceTime > Preferences in the menu bar at the top.
Click Sign Out, then click Sign Out again to confirm.
Restart your Mac, then open FaceTime and enter your Apple ID to sign back in.
3. Limit the number of people on Group FaceTime. While the feature lets you chat with up to 32 people on a single call, if your device is older or running old software, it can have a hard time keeping up. Try a one-on-one conversation first, then slowly add members to your Group FaceTime. That way, you can figure out what number works best and where the issues begin.
How to fix a poor connection on FaceTime
Tried everything and still having problems connecting to FaceTime? It could be your Wi-Fi or cellular network. If they’re running slow, or other people are using the same Wi-Fi to stream video or audio on their devices, you may not be able to make or receive FaceTime calls. So troubleshoot the app with this trick: Reset your network settings. It will clear your Wi-Fi passwords and saved networks, but it won’t erase any other data.
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch
Open Settings > General > Reset.
Tap Reset Network Settings. You may have to enter your passcode to confirm the reset.
Tap Reset Network Settings again.
Mac
Open System Preferences > Network, then click your Wi-Fi network in the list.
Click the minus sign to remove the network, then click Apply.
Click the plus sign and select Wi-Fi in the Interface dropdown.
Add your Service Name, click Create and re-enter your Wi-Fi information.
Problem 3: FaceTime is lagging or frozen
We’ve all experienced a FaceTime call where we’ve had choppy video, sounded like a robot, or all you can see is a blank screen (yikes!). But when your FaceTime app malfunctions like this, it’s usually because you have too many apps or programs running at the same time. Stop freezing up on camera—here’s how to fix FaceTime lag, according to our experts:
1. Close all open apps and programs, especially ones that can access the Camera. Once you get rid of your extra windows and tabs on your device, open FaceTime. It should run more smoothly.
2. Restart your device. Once it turns back on, check your Camera app to make sure your video and audio are working, then re-launch FaceTime.
3. Delete and re-install FaceTime. If it’s still not working after you shut down other programs or restart, try deleting it from your device and downloading it from the App Store. The process is simple:
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch
Tap and hold the FaceTime app, then tap Remove App.
Tap Delete App > Delete to confirm.
Open App Store, then search “FaceTime”.
Tap Get > Install to re-install the app.
Mac
Open Finder, then click Applications in the sidebar.
Click FaceTime, then drag it from the Applications folder to the Trash at the end of the Dock.
Return to Applications, then click App Store and search for “FaceTime”.
Click Get > Install to re-install the app.
4. Restore your device to its factory settings. Still no luck? If your FaceTime app is still giving you trouble, a factory reset may be your only option. But be sure to back up your device beforehand because this type of reset will delete any data you haven’t saved.
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch
Open Settings > General > Reset
Tap Erase all content and settings > Erase all content and settings.

Is phone insurance worth it?
Our smartphones are a huge part of our lives. They help us stay connected to friends, family, and the rest of world. So when they break, it can be frustrating—and costly.
Our smartphones are a huge part of our lives. They help us stay connected to friends, family, and the rest of world. So when they break, it can be frustrating—and costly.
In 2021, the average price of a smartphone is expected to rise to $633, according to Statista a market and consumer data firm. Some popular options from Apple®, Samsung®, and Google® can cost upwards of $1,000, and most people don’t have that kind of savings. According to a 2019 Federal Reserve report, 4 out of 10 Americans can’t afford to pay an unexpected $400 bill.
There is, however, a potential solution: cell phone insurance.
Is cell phone insurance worth it?
For the majority of people, it is. Most plans can come in handy if your device breaks, gets lost, or is stolen. They can help you avoid paying the full price of a replacement and protect you from accidents related to water damage and cracked screens. Plus, they give you peace of mind.
But phone insurance may not make sense for everyone. Let’s see if it’s right for you.
5 questions to consider if you’re thinking about phone insurance
Do you rely on your phone for daily tasks?
Do you tend to drop or misplace you phone?
Do you have children who have cell phones?
If you’re on a monthly installment plan, can you pay the full cost of a replacement while paying off your old phone?
Do you want tech support to help quickly activate a replacement phone on your carrier’s network and transfer your data to your new device?
If you answered “Yes” to any of the above, a phone insurance plan might be right for you. Let’s face it, the alternative means leaving your device unprotected.
3 reasons why people may skip phone insurance
Your phone is paid off, and you can afford to pay the full price of a new device if it ever gets lost, stolen, or damaged.
You don’t rely on your phone for daily tasks and have the time to research and shop for a replacement device.
You’re tech-savvy enough to activate a replacement phone on your own, including transferring data from your old device or the cloud.
If this sounds like you, you could be among the small group of people who may not need device protection based on cost savings alone. But remember—you're busy, and your life doesn't stop because you cracked your screen. With phone insurance, you can get convenient repairs when you need them, whether it’s a walk-in visit at a local store or a home visit by a qualified tech.
What does phone insurance cover?
Every year, 19 million phones are lost or stolen, yet most warranties don’t protect you from either. Some phone insurance plans do, however. They also cover the following:
Cracked phone screen and other accidental damage
Loss and theft
Normal wear and tear related to dust, internal heat, and humidity
Water damage from spills or submersion
Mechanical failures and defects after manufacturer’s warranty ends
Accessories that came with your devices, like the charger and earbuds
How does phone insurance work?
When you choose to protect your device, you receive comprehensive coverage for the items listed above, you save money, and you get convenience and peace of mind.
Most plans require a monthly premium plus a deductible when you file a claim. Doing so is easy and only takes a few minutes to complete online or over the phone. If you need help with the claims process, here’s a guide you might find useful. [link TBD: What to Expect Phone Claim].
How phone insurance can save you time
Waiting around with a broken phone can be frustrating. With insurance, however, you can quickly get your device fixed, whether it’s at your own home or a local repair shop. Either way, you’ll have your phone back up and running as soon as the same day. And if a technician can’t fix it, most replacement devices arrive in as little as 24 hours.
How phone insurance can save you money
Even if you wind up paying premiums and deductibles, phone insurance can help you avoid unexpected costs—especially if you’re paying in monthly installments. Without insurance, if something happens and you still have a balance, you could end up paying for your old phone and a brand-new replacement. Most insurance deductibles, however, cost far less.
